- The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
-
- CD-ROM Notes
-
- CMC Research's The Complete Works of William Shakespeare is based on a
- public domain version. Although the contents are familiar, dramatic
- enhancements in format and style make the works more readable, useable,
- and hopefully, more enjoyable.
-
- Our editors rewrapped and reformatted the text to take advantage of the
- extra space available on computer screens, and then renumbered each play or
- poem for easy reference. These line numbers may differ from many hardcopy
- versions.
-
- The probable date of writing is included at the beginning of each piece.
- The works are arranged on the disc in approximate chronological order.
-
- Each play is broken into scenes to make the index and retrieval process
- more efficient.
-
- The Glossary on this disc is also from the public domain; it includes
- brief word definitions and the works which contain that word.
-
-
- The additional freedom of a new format allows for some different
- conventions:
-
- * The Dramatis Personae for each play has been expanded to list every
- speaking part. Whenever a part in the play is indicated by a different
- name than that used in the Dramatis, the different name is noted
- within parentheses. After the usual "Lords, ladies, servants, &c."
- you will find a complete list of all the 'bit parts' in the play.
- If you are unsure of who's who while you are reading, the Dramatis
- can be called up at any point in the play by simply pressing the
- F9 key.
-
- * When two characters speak the same line in unison, you will see a
- format as follows:
-
- Character: \
- } Spoken line
- Character: /
-
- This makes it much clearer than the paper-saving condensed versions of
- Shakespeare's plays.
-
- * You will find stage directions much easier to locate and read since
- they are separated from dialogue. As an additional feature, original
- directions are placed in braces while editor's directions are kept
- in brackets.
-
- * In verse, if a line extends beyond the right margin its remainder
- is wrapped to the next line and indented 5 extra spaces. This makes
- line continuations stand out.
-
-
- Both portraits of Shakespeare can be accessed while in the Title Page
- by pressing the F9 key.
